About

Welcome to the history of Tavistock ... at your fingertips!

The Tavistock & District Historical Society proudly presents its online resource for all things related to Tavistock and the surrounding area.

Please feel free to navigate this website and let us know what interests you, what you want to see more of, and what is missing. With your help, we will attempt to make your online experience as enjoyable as possible - now and in the future.

If you like what you see please consider making a donation.  Like every organization our expenses mount up and contributions help the cause.  Charitable tax receipts are issued for donations of $20 or more.  Donations can be made using the Donate button on the website or by cheque payable to Tavistock & District Historical Society mailed to Box 280, Tavistock, ON  N0B 2R0.   Thank you.

What you'll find

(1)  feature stories about people, events and places in our community.

(2)  little stories about items in our museum and archives.

(3)  the Lemp Studio Collection - a unique resource of some 4,000 glass negatives.  For easiest use when searching, click on the Grid mode.  Many of the photos are named but many are not.  If you can help with identification, please let us know.

(4)  our obituary index, a wonderful resource for family historians.

(5)  our "Year of the Veteran" research that resulted in the compilation of the personal histories of more than 500 local veterans.

(6)  our "Yesterday" Historical Society newsletters that have been published over the years.  Read about some of our activities, events and displays.  The newsletters provide an insight into what's available for researchers at our museum and archives.

(7)  postcards of Tavistock and area.

(8)  histories of some of Tavistock's houses.  This is a unique look at our local history.

(9)  stories and pictures about the one-room schoolhouses in our area.

(10)  and much more.

Check back frequently to see what has changed. It is our intent to add information on an ongoing basis. Of course, if you have ideas or would like to help, please feel free to contact us.

Our Museum/Archives is at 37 Maria Street, Tavistock.  It is open by appointment only. To arrange a visit, please call Paul at 519-655-3334 or Tom at 519-655-2326.
