Comments: Tavistock Gazette - December 16, 1915- Among those who enlisted in the 77th Regiment at Ottawa under Captain O'Donahue we noticed the name of Mr. Herbert Jarvis, of the Ottawa Free Press. Herbert, whose home is in Walkerton, was at one time an employee of The Gazette but along with another Tavistock boy, Mr. Norman Dopp, he moved to Ottawa where, they were both employed by the Free Press. Herb, will be remembered by many as being the best full-back on our soccer team that we ever had and helped us win several championships. He was also a strong supporter of the local baseball team and on several occasions caught behind the bat. Best wishes are expressed by all for the safety of Herb. Along with him there enlisted four other typos: Pte. Frank Shore, of Stratford, son of Mr. R. T. Shore; Ptes. Jim Staples, Clifford Miller and Robert English. The Free Press says editorially that next week these fine and intelligent young men will have donned their Khaki and their manhood. The Free Press loses a quintette of the cleanest and brightest young men that ever stepped into a printing office. Good luck to them.

Tavistock Gazette-November 23, 1916 - Former Tavistock Man Missing - Word has been received here that Pte. H. Jarvis, an employee of the Ottawa Free Press composing room, and at one time on "The Gazette" Staff, is missing in France since October 28th. Word has been sent to his relatives in Walkerton, Ontario. Pte. Jarvis enlisted with the 77th Battalion in Ottawa, and was transferred to another unit in England. In a letter received last week from Lance Corporal Frank Shore, also an "Ottawa Free Press" employee, it was stated that he heard that Pte. Jarvis had been wounded in the stomach. Pte. Jarvis has many friends in Tavistock, and further news of him will be anxiously awaited .
