Everything old is new again!

Where do you draw the line between old and historic?

It’s hard to believe but 40 years ago three editions of The Tavistock Mail were published as the first historic information newsletters to predate the current Tavistock and District Historical Society’s newsletter titled “Yesterday.”

For this reason we have recently placed these three original editions on our website as another source of research documents.

The first ‘Mail’ dated September 6, 1979 provides articles pertaining to “The Glasgow Warehouse” and the contributions of long-time owner Frederick Krug to the prosperity and growth of the community.

The second edition (September 1980) focuses on “The Tavistock Milling Company” and the misfortunes of its owners and operators throughout those early years. The mill burned several times and was rebuilt each time to greater capacity. In this edition, Mr. Krug contributes a sweeping early history of commerce in the village in a personal letter that describes the origins of flour mills in the village.

Finally, the ”Tavistock Cheese & Butter Co.“ edition (January 1982) tells of the beginnings of the cheese factory business in Tavistock. Even though the business has gone through many transitions over the years, it remains the largest employer in the vicinity.

You can download and print each of these rare editions to read or include in your own research.
